Individual Tax Returns
Filing your tax return every year can be a time-consuming and confusing process. The more you do, the more you earn and the more your family grows, the more complicated it gets. When Putting Together Your Tax Return, Remember:
- Copy of last year's federal tax return (state if applicable), only if we did not prepare your return last year.
- Drivers license (Taxpayer & Spouse).
- Social Security cards (each person/dependent on return).
- Date of Birth (each person/dependent on return).
- Voided check for direct deposit.
- Form W-2's Wage & Earning Statements from all employers.
- Form 1099's Income for self employment, interest, dividends, retirement, miscellaneous, stocks, or mutual fund investments*.
- Form 1099 for early IRA distribution or other distributions.
- Form 1098 Income for mortgage interest and property taxes paid.
- Refinancing information of mortgage.
- Property tax forms.
- Charitable contributions or Donations / Out-of-pocket expenses (listed & totaled) / Work-related Mileage.
- Settlement statements (HUD-1) from any houses bought or sold.
- 401K statements / Regular IRA contributions / Roth IRA contributions.
- Income from self employment not shown on 1099 forms and expenses related to that income (see common business deductions).
- *Info from sales of stock, mutual funds, or other significant assets should have: dates of purchase and amounts you originally paid.
- Taxes paid during the year – estimated income tax payments, property, sales tax.
- Any sales tax paid on significant purchases (car, major appliances, etc.).
- Form 1098T or 1098E for College tuition, loans, or loan interest paid on each student (child or adult).
- Educator expenses for teacher supplies or expenses not reimbursed.
- Recent IRS notices or state tax authority correspondence, if any.
- Childcare payments made (amount, care provider’s name, address and ID number).
- Unemployment compensation.
- Social Security benefits.
- Schedule K-1’s from any partnership, S-Corporation, Estate, or Trust.
- Medical expenses and any health insurance and long term care insurance premiums paid.
- Form 1095 or proof of health insurance such as an insurance card.
- Year-end statement from all investment accounts.
- Alimony paid or received.
- Divorce decree if you were divorced in prior year.
- Form 1099G for Gambling & lottery winnings.
- Moving expenses.
- Anything else, out-of-pocket, that you think might be deductible – it’s better to give us too much than to risk missing out on some of the deductions you’re legally entitled to take!.
